LyricWiki had to disable their API due to complaints from music producers: Of course, if they start to work good, the music industry is likely going to shutdown their service too, it has happen to pretty much all services which doesn't officially license the lyrics from the music producers. However, I'll try to get some time to take a look at it in the not too distant future. Lyrdb which was mentioned, is another "illegal" alternative that could be an option, but their site seemed to be really slow so I'm not sure how good it will work. I don't want to switch the plugin to a commercial mode if I can't guarantee that it works and I can't guarantee that without a partner agreement with a lyrics provider who officially license lyrics from music producers. I'm 100% sure I can't earn anywhere close to $20k/year on a lyrics plugin for Squeezebox, based on the sales from my other plugins I seriously doubt it would even be possible for me to reach $500/year. It could also be that the music producers which musixmatch have licensed the lyrics from requires a minimum fee per year in their license agreement. Musixmatch don't want to handle purchases from individual users, they want to focus on selling their services to other businesses and to make it worth for them to handle a new business customer they want to be guaranteed a minimal yearly fee. > results in that it's just a matter of time until that stops working too. > and they also have some legal issues which probably > from but previously their data hasn't been as good as > will require too much work and too high risk to maintain something that If it doesn't provide an API it's not an option because it > I'll look into the possibilities to integrate that instead of > If anyone knows another lyrics source that offers an API let me know and > lovers, but unfortunately there isn't anything I can do about it. > I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this is causing all lyrics > since you aren't dependent on an online service or plugin. > advantage of that is that it's going to continue to work in the future > have to put the lyrics in the LYRICS tag of your music files, the > So if you want to continue enjoying lyrics on your Squeezebox you now > musixmatch could offer lyrics for free for non commercial usage as long > to charge people who want to view lyrics, I think it's great that > musixmatch for this, it's probably the music industry that requires them > plugin and give everything to musixmatch. > amount if I would try to start charging people for the Song Lyrics > pockets and it's also totally unrealistic to get anywhere close to this > currently $20 000/year which is unrealistic for me to take out of my own > support free API access, their minimum fee for a commercial agreement is > The reason is that musixmatch have informed me that they can no longer > Lyrics plugin is likely going to stop working good very soon. > Just for information to anyone using my Song Lyrics plugin, the Song Quoting erland (erland.5r4lnb (AT) no-mx (DOT) ): Song Lyrics already supports lyrics from but previously their data hasn't been as good as and they also have some legal issues which probably results in that it's just a matter of time until that stops working too. If it doesn't provide an API it's not an option because it will require too much work and too high risk to maintain something that parses websites to get lyrics data. If anyone knows another lyrics source that offers an API let me know and I'll look into the possibilities to integrate that instead of musixmatch. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience this is causing all lyrics lovers, but unfortunately there isn't anything I can do about it. So if you want to continue enjoying lyrics on your Squeezebox you now have to put the lyrics in the LYRICS tag of your music files, the advantage of that is that it's going to continue to work in the future since you aren't dependent on an online service or plugin. I suspect we shouldn't blame musixmatch for this, it's probably the music industry that requires them to charge people who want to view lyrics, I think it's great that musixmatch could offer lyrics for free for non commercial usage as long as they did. The reason is that musixmatch have informed me that they can no longer support free API access, their minimum fee for a commercial agreement is currently $20 000/year which is unrealistic for me to take out of my own pockets and it's also totally unrealistic to get anywhere close to this amount if I would try to start charging people for the Song Lyrics plugin and give everything to musixmatch. Just for information to anyone using my Song Lyrics plugin, the Song Lyrics plugin is likely going to stop working good very soon.
